BBQ’ing and Fourth of July Family Food Ideas

It’s BBQ season! And it is something we absolutely love around our house. The smoker or grill is going almost every night. There is something wonderful when you get a whiff of meat on a hot grill or the hickory smoke filling the air from the smoker. Your mouth begins to water and you start dreaming of how everything will taste. Then when you finally get to bite into all that deliciousness…it is pure bliss!

Getting to share it all with our friends and family, well, that’s something else we enjoy very much as well!

So you’re thinking about throwing a 4th of July BBQ party. In come the questions…what should I make & how many options…so on and so forth.

Here is how we recommend going about planning an event from the team at Harvest to Home. We will recap later so you don’t miss anything!

First things first, you’ll want to have something that people can nibble on while waiting for dinner to cook. Our go to is definitely good ol’ chips and dip. They are great for snacking on and they’re always a crowd pleaser, especially if there are kids around.

Lately we’ve been on a homemade tortilla chip kick, they’re simple to do and don’t take much time. You can fry them up or take a lighter approach by baking them in the oven.

Simply take fresh corn tortillas, and cut them into wedges, I like 6’s so you can really get into that dip.  Place them on a baking sheet in a single layer and spray them lightly with pan spray, season with salt and pepper and then place them into a pre-heated oven at 350F for 12-15 minutes. You want them light golden brown and crisp. Ovens may vary so you’ll want to adjust the cooking time accordingly.

Roasted Corn & Black Bean Salsa from Paula Deen

Serve them up with your favorite dip, ours is a Roasted Corn and Black Bean Salsa. This recipe is actually Paula Deen’s but we love it because of the poblano peppers that’s added in. You can omit it if you want to, or change it for a different pepper if you want it hotter. Full of fresh veggies, lime juice and cilantro, it’s perfect!

Next, pick your sides! Two options for groups under 20, three if you plan on having more over!
Our favorites…

This zingy salad looks so refreshing and is super easy to throw together with just a handful of ingredients.

The sweetness of the pineapple is balanced by the acidity of the lime and the crunchiness of the cucumber.

Pineapple, & Cucumber Salad
Crisp Green Salad

Keeping things to a healthier side, let’s add a crisp green salad. The beauty of these is that your topping selections are limitless and can be adjusted to suit your tastes.

Fresh chopped romaine lettuce with croutons, grape tomatoes, roasted bell peppers, red onion, black olives, crispy tortilla strips and a chipotle ranch dressing. Top it off with some salty cheese like feta or a Mexican style like cotija.

Juicy Burger With All The Fixin's

My husband swears that the best burgers are made from ground beef and ground pork. And I hate to admit it, but he’s right. He makes them 75% ground beef (80/20) and depending on the mood, 25% of either ground Italian sausage or Chorizo. Add in some salt and pepper and an egg, we keep it simple.

Let the mixture rest in the fridge for about 30 minutes then form your patties. Best trick ever, before placing your burgers on the grill, make an indentation in the middle of the burger. When they cook they shrink and they bow up in the middle. If you put the indent in, it creates a thinner center, this helps prevent that from happening. The other thing you can do is get a burger press.

Add your favorite toppings. Standbys that most everyone can agree on are lettuce, tomato, onions, and of course pickles. Have a platter of cheese there so everyone can pick their own. Cheddar and Pepper Jack go over well around here.

If you’re looking for something extra juicy, check out the Steak House Burger from Once Upon a Chef.

Watermelon Wedges

Finish it all off with a platter of cool, fresh Watermelon and I’d say you have a menu for success!

With that we wish you all a very Happy 4th of July! Be safe, have fun and eat well!
